DFW Cybersecurity Events 2026: Hardware Checklist

October 2026 gives North Texas IT and security leaders several opportunities to compare notes, hear new risk perspectives, and meet peers. It is also a good month to inspect a less glamorous part of the security program: the retired hardware still sitting inside the building.

A server that is powered off is not automatically sanitized. A firewall removed from the rack may still contain configuration, certificates, and credentials. A backup appliance in storage can hold the same sensitive records the production team works to protect.

Three October events for the DFW technology calendar

October 1: Secure Dallas

Secure Dallas is scheduled for Thursday, October 1, 2026, at the Davidson-Gundy Alumni Center at The University of Texas at Dallas. The event describes itself as a North Texas cybersecurity conference for IT security professionals and business executives.

October 6: North Texas Tech Connect

North Texas Tech Connect is scheduled for October 6, 2026, at the Plano Event Center. The event brings together the regional technology community and announces its award winners at the conference.

October 20: NTXISSA Cybersecurity Conference 13

The North Texas ISSA Annual Cybersecurity Conference is scheduled for Tuesday, October 20, 2026. The event page and ISSA listing identify the Plano Event Center as the location.

The retired-hardware security checklist

Cybersecurity programs usually have strong controls around active endpoints and weaker controls around equipment between active service and final disposition. Ask these questions during October.

Do we know where every retired device is?

Compare the asset system with the server room, storage closet, return cage, and remote-worker return shelf. Look specifically for:

• old domain controllers and file servers;
• backup appliances and external drives;
• retired SAN or NAS equipment;
• firewalls, VPN appliances, and wireless controllers;
• laptops returned by former employees;
• multifunction printers with internal storage;
• USB media, tapes, and loose drives.

Have credentials and management ties been revoked?

Before equipment leaves, remove active management enrollment, local accounts, API tokens, VPN material, certificates, cloud-controller ties, monitoring agents, and license assignments.

Sanitizing a local disk later does not revoke a copied credential or remove a device from a vendor portal.

Does each media type have a defined path?

NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2 describes media sanitization as making access to target data infeasible for a chosen level of effort. The selected technique should fit the media, data sensitivity, and organization’s written requirements.

Can we prove what happened?

Basic projects may need a manifest and service record. Higher-assurance projects may call for per-drive serial numbers, before-and-after photos, witnessed physical destruction, time and location evidence, digital signatures, hashes, and long-term online verification.

If the audit finds a room of retired equipment, your team does not have to load it into vehicles and search for a commercial drop-off.
