Microsoft SQL Server 2016 reached end of support on July 14, 2026. According to Microsoft’s 2026 lifecycle calendar, products at end of support no longer receive new security updates, non-security updates, or assisted support under the standard lifecycle.
Most migration plans focus correctly on the database: application compatibility, cutover, testing, backups, and rollback. The physical server and storage often become an afterthought. That is how a finished migration turns into three retired hosts, an old SAN shelf, and a box of database drives sitting in a locked room for another year.
End of support does not mean “throw the server away today”
The software deadline is a risk-management trigger, not a disposal instruction. Your organization still decides whether to upgrade, isolate, purchase an available extended option, migrate the workload, or accept a documented exception.
Hardware should leave only after the technical owner confirms that production has moved, recovery has been tested, and the retention team has approved what happens to the old copies.
A database-server retirement checklist
1. Identify every copy of the data
The obvious copy is on the database volume. Less obvious copies may be on local boot drives, temp volumes, transaction-log disks, replica servers, backup appliances, tapes, exported virtual disks, and an administrator’s emergency USB drive.
Inventory the whole system before removing media. A destruction certificate for one host is not very useful if the forgotten backup shelf still holds the same records.
2. Confirm the cutover owner
Write down who has authority to release each server. The person coordinating the equipment pickup should not have to guess whether a machine is a dead staging box or the last functioning replica.
Record hostnames, asset tags, rack positions, serial numbers, storage relationships, and the business system each device supported. That information helps prevent the wrong device from leaving.
3. Remove credentials and management ties
Before release, address service accounts, local administrator credentials, certificates, backup-agent tokens, monitoring agents, remote-management access, cloud registrations, and support contracts. Wiping a disk later does not revoke a credential that was copied elsewhere.
4. Choose a media path deliberately
Functional media may support a sanitization method that preserves the drive for reuse. Failed, inaccessible, or policy-designated media may need physical destruction. NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2 describes media sanitization as making access to target data infeasible for a given level of effort and emphasizes selecting techniques that fit the media and the organization’s risk.

5. Decide what evidence you need
A basic internal refresh may need a pickup manifest and service record. A stricter project may call for drive serial numbers, before-and-after photos, witnessed physical destruction, a cryptographic hash, or long-term online verification.

What equipment can leave in the same project?
A SQL Server retirement often releases more than the database host:
- rack or blade servers;
- direct-attached or shared storage;
- switches and host-bus equipment;
- UPS units and rack power devices;
- retired backup appliances;
- rails, cables, and approved peripherals.
Keeping the project together can improve free-pickup qualification because useful servers, storage, and enterprise network equipment may retain recovery value.
